Today, medical imaging is challenged. But what if there was a tool capable of exquisite nanomolar sensitivity, high resolution independent of location in the body, and harnessing flexible, long-lasting, and safe tracers that may have the ability to selectively and locally heat? Today Magnetic Particle Imaging, or MPI, has that potential and more. MPI is a disruptive diagnostic imaging technique that uses a configuration of magnets very different from MRI to detect nanoparticles. This configuration creates a sensitive field free region at the center. When this region is moved over a nanoparticle, the nanoparticle changes direction and creates a signal that we detect with high precision and sensitivity. The accumulation of signals can be reconstructed into a high resolution image. We believe that MPI not only has the potential to benefit cardiovascular medicine, oncology treatments, stem cell research, and more, but is going to change how we see the human body function.
