[Twins and Multiples] [The terrible twos]
[Dr. Carol Cooper] [General Practitioner] From around the age of 18 months
all toddlers start pushing their parents to the limit.
This is to assert their will, and of course, to assert their independence from you.
Now, the difference with parents of twins or more is that your attention is divided,
and one twin can get frustrated when you're dealing with the other one.
It also becomes very hard to keep both of them safe
while at the same time allowing each toddler to explore the world as they should.
When you rush to the aid of one toddler who is upset or hurt or in trouble
it can mean that the other twin is left on his own and at risk of injury.
Toys which are meant to be safe for toddlers can actually become dangerous
for twins and multiples.
Anything with string attached, for instance, can be used by one toddler
to strangle his brother.
Pretend hammers become real weapons,
and even the cutest toys, like rocking horses,
can trap little fingers underneath.
Safety, obviously, has to come first,
and if this means that you're not always able to give them as much
individual attention as you'd like to then so be it.
