[Dr Carol Cooper, General Practitioner] Pre-eclampsia causes high blood pressure, and it causes protein to appear in the urine. Normally, it doesn't have any symptoms at all, so it's just picked up at antenatal checks. However, there are some symptoms that are very significant. So if you have any of them, you do need to seek urgent help. Look out for headache in late pregnancy, especially if you also have a visual disturbance like flashing lights. Be aware too that upper abdominal pain or pain below the ribs can be a symptom of severe pre-eclampsia.
