photographs have emerged which show evidence of prescription drugs
and alcohol in the singer's hotel room.
According to reports, Whitney was found in a bathtub in her suite
at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles surrounded by bottles of prescription drugs
including Xanax and amoxicillin.
There was also evidence of over-the-counter drugs, ibuprofen,
acetaminophen, caffeine, and anti-histamines.
The most potent of these is Xanax.
Usually prescribed for anxiety or panic disorders,
Xanax is frequently used by performers for its relaxing effect.
Xanax is addictive, and abuse of the drug is more common in people
who have a history of drug dependency.
When combined with alcohol, it is a powerful sedative, in some cases
resulting in fatal respiratory depression, in which the person's breathing
slows and then stops.
Whitney Houston has been open about her heavy use of legal and illegal drugs.
Perhaps in her case, as in the deaths of Michael Jackson and Marilyn Monroe,
it was doctor prescribed legal medications that ultimately caused her premature death.
